turn your cloak for fairy folks live in old oaks, 2021

As time passes, the den is no longer only used by Sop, but by others including bees burrowed in the ground, and a robin.

‘turn your cloak for fairy folks live in old oaks’ incorporates photographs, field recordings, digital film and 16mm animation, and pulls the focus of Sop’s relationship to the den 'out', by inviting other bodies 'in' to physically experience it.

Dancer Michaela Gerussi performs a site-specific dance responding to the den’s structure, and the ritualistic experience of visiting it, alongside the bees and the birds who continue their daily activities, the den silently witnessing. A soundtrack by Markland Starkie and MIDDEX based on field recordings made within the den accompanies.

The title comes from an Old English folk saying to charm against the actions of fairies.

Film commissioned by Wellcome Collection for Rooted Beings exhibition, 2022, edited by Sop and Kester Davis.
