The Den, Parts 1 - 3, 2020-2021
As someone in the “clinically extremely vulnerable” category, Sop was forced to shield during the pandemic. This three part audio work narrates their process of building a secret den in a cemetery at the edges of an urban wood. The Den provides a space for respite, deeply connected to nature: a structure of protection and safety in which to take shelter. As this vessel becomes an increasingly important character in their daily life, the work expands to document how Sop’s chronically ill body navigates the challenges of the unfolding pandemic, and how through the ritual of visiting their chosen hiding place, The Den becomes a catalyst of a transformative and transforming relationship: a medium in which to translate their struggles, and look towards healing from nature.
